Adobe Illustrator CS4 question?

I'm trying to create a template for business cards, 10up. I created my page (GRID / guides) added my mark. Created a rectangle of 3.5 x 2 and applied: Effects> Distort & Transform> Transform twice. Once to move the rectangle to the left by 3.5 inches (no bleeding), and move down 2 inches (4 copies). Therefore 10, what I need. Now, now, if I change the original, nine copies modified accordingly. What I need is to be able to stick a card in another AI file in the rectangle so that the transformations are applied. I can not seem to do. What I am doing wrong please? Advance for any help!

U want to spent an image from a AI file? First, export the file in JPG format and open ai in Adobe Photoshop and drag the layer that ur still working in Photoshop. Hope this helps
